The new numismatic issue for the year 2021

Rome, 24 June 2022 – On the occasion of the celebration of St John the Baptist, Patron of the Order, the Sovereign Military Order of Malta presented the new 2021 numismatic issue of the Lieutenancy of the Grand Master of Fra’ Marco Luzzago, who died prematurely on 7 June.

The coins are part of the new “Hospitals of the Order” series which, starting with the representation of the first hospital in Jerusalem in the 11th century, with the following issues will trace the Order of Malta’s hospitaller activity during its 900 years, from its origins to the present day.

The 2021 numismatic issue, announced by the Order’s Sovereign Council with decree 2225 of 9 February 2022, is expressed in Scudi, Tarì and Grani, the Order’s historical currency. It consists of six coins, in gold, silver and bronze, bearing on the obverse the coat of arms of H.E. Fra’ Marco Luzzago, the Sovereign Order of Malta’s Lieutenant of the Grand Master, and on the reverse a knight of the Order treating a malade, with the image of the first hospital of the Order of St. John in Jerusalem, inspired by the remains unearthed in the excavations in the Old City of Jerusalem.
