Special postmark – Solferino 2024, Italian Red Cross

On the occasion of the “Solferino 2024” event organised by the Italian Red Cross, which will take place at the CRI Village, at the Italia 90′ Municipal Sports Ground in Solferino, on 22 June 2024 the Sovereign Military Order of Malta’s Poste Magistrali will use the special postmark at a dedicated stand at the event site.

The postmark, created by Giancarlo Federico, depicts the typical torches with the emblem of the Italian Red Cross, the protagonists of the torchlight procession that takes place every year in June, between Solferino and Castiglione delle Stiviere, in memory of the battle of Solferino on 24 June 1859, from which Henry Dunant was inspired to create a voluntary movement that would provide aid to the wounded at the battle sites.

The postmark is completed by the inscriptions ‘SOVRANO MILITARE ORDINE DI MALTA’, ‘POSTE MAGISTRALI’, the legend ‘SOLFERINO 2024’, the inscription ‘CROCE ROSSA ITALIANA’, and the date ’22.VI.2024′.

Since the Poste Magistrali’s counter will be closed to the public on that day, as it will be on 24 June for the festivity of St John the Baptist, the Order’s patron Saint, the use of the postmark for the dispatch of correspondence will exceptionally also be permitted on Tuesday 25 June 2024.

Items for reposting, individually franked by the sender with stamps belonging to the relevant set, must reach the Poste Magistrali office by 22 August 2024. A suitable self-addressed envelope, bearing the Order of Malta stamps corresponding to the ordinary (Posta4) or priority (Posta1) postal rate in force in Italy, must be enclosed for the postmarked items to be returned under cover. For any return by registered mail, please contact Poste Magistrali in advance.

Items to be returned uncovered must reach Poste Magistrali by 9 July 2024 and must be individually marked as “Corrispondenza filatelica” (Philatelic correspondence) on the address side in indelible ink. Should this indication be missing, it will be applied by Poste Magistrali.
