Stamp description | On the occasion of the 550th anniversary of his birth, which took place in 1475 in Caprese (Arezzo), the Order of Malta honours Michelangelo Buonarroti, sculptor, painter, architect and poet, one of the greatest Italian artists of the Renaissance. The stamp depicts the marble statue of ‘Cristo Redentore’, exhibited at the Basilica of Santa Maria sopra Minerva, in Rome, also known as ‘Cristo della Minerva’, which the artist made between 1519 and 1521. On the left side of the stamp is the inscription ‘MICHELANGELO BUONARROTI’ and the years ‘1475’, ‘2025’, while on the right side, in legend, ‘Statua del Cristo della Minerva, Roma’. The stamp is completed by the inscriptions ‘SOVRANO MILITARE ORDINE DI MALTA’ and ‘POSTE MAGISTRALI’, the emblem of the Order’s activities and the face value ‘€ 1.30’. |
