Stamp description

the great work Nativity by Domenico di Jacopo di Pace, known as Beccafumi after his patron Lorenzo Beccami, is dedicated to Christmas. A foremost practitioner of Mannerism,

Beccafumi began his artistic career in 1518. Anastasia Marisli commissioned his Nativity for the church of San Martino in Siena in 1523.  In the painting, the spectacular triumphal arch in ruins, symbol of the decline of paganism, is dominated by the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove which, surrounded by festive angels, descends on the Child and surrounds the portentous event with divine light.
