Federico Barocci: Rest on the Flight into Egypt.
Vatican City, Pinacoteca Vaticana (Vatican Museums).

Around 1573, Federico Barocci (1535 ca. – 1612) was commissioned by Simonetto Anastagi from Perugia to paint a Rest on the flight into Egypt, a theme from the Evangelist Matthew’s narrative and expanded in the Apocrypha, for the Chiesa di Gesù. Partly replicated by Jacopo da Varagine in the Golden Legend, it influenced artists in various figurative interpretations. The painting, also called Madonna of the Cherries, was transferred to the Quirinal Palace in Rome in 1773 by order of Pope Clement XIV and has been part of the collections in the Vatican Pinacoteca since 1802.
