During the 17th and 18th centuries, botany became established as an autonomous science, and not only an aid to medicine for therapeutic purposes. In botany texts, illustrations were used to complement the description of plants, many of which from exotic lands; these illustrations were extremely detailed, with great quality of colour and design, for the identification of the various species. In the watercolour illustrations accompanying the botanical text in the Florindie ou histoire physico-economique des vegetaux de la torride (1789), the plants have binomial nomenclature, introduced in 1753 by Carlo Linnaeus, in which each plant is indicated by two Latin names referred to the genus and the species.
