Stamp description

Grimani Breviary (16th cent.): The Months of the Year.
Venice, Biblioteca Nazionale Marciana.

Made in Flanders, the famous manuscript was named after its owner, Cardinal Domenico Grimani, a man of vast culture, a lover of the arts and one of the most famous collectors of his time. The Breviary begins with the Calendar in which, alongside the calendar of the month, there are full-page miniatures of the twelve months illustrating, with a wealth of detail, rural traditions typical of the months to which they refer or scenes from daily life.

Continuing the previous postal issue depicting the miniatures of the months from January to June, the stamps of this issue reproduce:
€ 0.10: Month of July: Wheat harvesting and sheep shearing;
€ 0.95: Month of August: Leaving for the hunt;
€ 1.00: Month of September: The harvest;
€ 2.00: Month of October: Sowing;
€ 2.55: Month of November: Harvest of acorns and hare hunting;
€ 3.00: Month of December: Wild boar hunting.
