| Stamp description | The stamp is dedicated to the celebration of the Jubilee Year of St. Nicasius, granted by H.H. Pope Francis, from 1 July 2024 to 1 September 2025, to honour the Saint who, in 1185, set out for the Holy Land as a professed friar of the Hospitaller Order of St. John of Jerusalem, to assist and defend the sick and pilgrims. Taken prisoner by the Saracens in 1187, during the battle of Hattin, near Jerusalem, he was martyred for refusing to deny his faith in Christ.
The stamp reproduces the icon of Saint Nicasius, created by a Sicilian iconographer, Alfredo Efraim Augello, for the Jubilee celebration of the Saint. The stamp is completed by the vertical inscription on the left side “Anno Giubilare di San Nicasio” and, on two lines, “1 luglio 2024” and “1 settembre 2025”, the legend inserted at the bottom “Icona di San Nicasio Martire, A. Efraim Augello”, the inscriptions “SOVRANO MILITARE ORDINE DI MALTA” and “POSTE MAGISTRALI”, the emblem of the Order’s activities and the face value “€ 2.90”. |
