Stamp description

in 1568, the period of his full maturity, Paolo Farinati painted the Baptism of Jesus, kept in Verona in the Battistero di San Giovanni in Fonte. In the painting, the foliage of the tree against which the Baptist has leant his staff is partially hidden by a dense dark cloud within which, illuminated by divine light, God appears in the centre of a host of cherubim. The virtual triangulation that connects the hand of the Creator, the Holy Spirit symbolically depicted as a dove and the hand of St. John pouring the baptismal water, encloses and highlights the deep theological and doctrinal significance of the scene.
