The new coin issues for 2022 were presented in the Magistral Palace, celebrating the Lieutenancy of the Grand Master of Fra’ John Dunlap, beginning on 14th June. The ceremony was attended by the Lieutenant of the Grand Master, who was given the first copy of the new coins, and the members of the Sovereign Council.

The coins are part of the “Hospitals of the Order” series, which in 2022 focuses on the representation of the ancient 13th-century hospital in Acre. The series, which began in 2021 with the depiction of the first hospital in Jerusalem in the 11th century, will continue to celebrate the Order of Malta’s hospitaller activity over its 900-year history, from its origins to the present day.

The 2022 coin set, approved by the Order’s Sovereign Council with decree 407 of 7 November 2022, is expressed in scudi, tarì and grani, the Order’s historical currency. It consists of 6 gold, silver and bronze coins, bearing on the obverse the coat of arms of Fra’ John Dunlap, Lieutenant of the Grand Master of the Sovereign Order of Malta, and on the reverse an artistic representation of the city of Acre with the ancient hospital of the Knights Hospitaller of the Order of St. John, present there until 1291, based on an old city map. The artistic content was curated by the sculptor Patrizio Daniele, who was also responsible for the 2021 issue.
