Stamp description | increasingly refined supports for frescoes were invented during the 16th and 17th centuries, especially in central Italy, with the use of a preparatory cartoon for frescoes which returned the drawing to life-size, with sinopia being abandoned. Subject to clients’ consent, the frescoes were created by great artists and embellished palaces and villas, such as the Palazzetto that Zuccari had built in the centre of Rome, the Casino Boncompagni Ludovisi with the famous fresco of Aurora by Guercino. In Paris, in Queen Anne of Austria’s apartments in the Louvre, the rooms were harmonized by Romanelli’s creations. € 1.10: Federico Zuccari: Wisdom (det.) € 2.70: G. Barbieri known as Guercino: Ceiling with Allegory of Aurora (det.) € 3.60: Giovanni Francesco Romanelli: Peace is about to set fire to a pile of weapons. |
