Stamp description

the entire souvenir sheet is occupied by the miniature of Giovanni da Fiesole called Fra Angelico, dated between 1424 and 1430, coming from Gradual 558 and dedicated to St. John the Baptist. Inside the initial large souvenir sheet, with figure and caudata “D” (De ventre matris mee vocavit me Dominus) constituting the first stamp, St. John is represented during his period in the desert, wearing a camel-hair tunic and holding the cross; in the background a rocky landscape with a fresh-water spring flowing into a pool, perhaps representing the river Jordan in which he baptized people.

In the vegetal frieze there are drôlerie of fantastic animals similar to peacocks, chrysalides and crickets, whilst the external frieze ends with the figure of a man wrapped in leaves, constituting the second stamp in the sheet. Both stamps bear the inscriptions “SOVRANO MILITARE ORDINE DI MALTA” and “POSTE MAGISTRALI”, the coat of arms of the Order’s activities and the face value € 3.50.

Below to the right there is the two-line inscription “SOVRANO MILITARE ORDINE DI MALTA POSTE MAGISTRALI”, surmounted by the Order’s coat of arms. Centre bottom the inscriptions “Beato Angelico, San Giovanni in eremitaggio nel deserto, Miniatura dal Graduale 558, Firenze, Museo di San Marco” and “Su concessione del Ministero della Cultura – Direzione regionale Musei della Toscana – Firenze”.
